FAA – CAA – ICAO Licence Conversions

To avail of an IAA-issued EASA FCL licence on the basis of your FAA licence you will need to:

1. 1. Be an EU resident.
   2. Hold a valid FAA Medical (FAA Basic Med is not acceptable – a minimum of an FAA Class 3 medical is required.)
   3. Hold a valid FAA licence (PPL or higher) with a current flight review dated in the previous 24 months. Waterford Aero Club can assist if a flight review is required – see our FAA page for details.
   4. Complete an IAA English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment and score 4 or above.
   5. Obtain an IAA medical, Class 2 or above.
   6. The key benefit of this route that there is no requirement to sit any theoretical exams. The examiner will verify your PPL theoretical knowledge during the oral portion prior to the skills test flight.
   7. Pass a PPL Skills Test with an IAA examiner.

   This route is valid at PPL level only, but is available for both single and multi-engine ratings. You will retain your FAA licence and this is not a “conversion” where your FAA licence is replaced with an EASA one. Once the process is complete, you will hold completely independent FAA and EASA Private Pilot Licences – each with their own recency and revalidation requirements.

   If your FAA PPL includes night privileges then a night rating can be applied for at the same time as the initial EASA PPL issue. No further night training is required.

   It is also possible to add an instrument rating (IR) to your EASA FCL licence based on your FAA IR. Please contact us for more information if you hold an IR as there are varying experience requirements at IR level to be considered before advising the most appropriate option.

   Note: FAA “piggy-back” licences issued under FAR 61.75 are not eligible for conversion via this process.
