Private Pilot Licence

The Private Pilot Licence permits you to act as the pilot in command of an aircraft for private use.

Learn to fly with us

Learning to fly is not as daunting a task as it may first seem. Most pilots share the opinion that their days of being a student pilot were the most rewarding and enjoyable of all their time in an aircraft. Whether you dream of becoming an airline captain or a hobby pilot, the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the first step along the way. It enables the Private Pilot to continue training towards a career as a commercial pilot, train as an Instructor or gain experience on complex and more powerful aircraft. The PPL does not enable the pilot to fly for ‘hire or reward’ (i.e. you can not charge members of the public for pleasure flights or get paid to take aerial photographs and so on) but is essential for anybody who wants a career in flying.

Night Rating

The Night Rating allows you to act as the pilot in command of an aircraft during night time.

Get night rated from EUR950

As a holder of a PPL, you can obtain additional ratings to enhance your license. At Waterford Aero Club, we offer training for the Night Rating using our Piper Warrior from just €950. This rating is a requirement before starting the Commercial Pilot Licence course. Additionally, it is a firm favourite with newly-qualified PPLs because it is a very straightforward qualification with no requirement for a flight examination.

Hour Building

We offer some of the best value hour building packages in Europe to help you expand your logbook.

Hour building from EUR98/hour

Our hour building packages all give a discount of 5% of the tach hour rate for the aircraft. The packages have a time limit within which they must be completed and an exclusive membership fee according to this time limit. We can help you maximise your hour-building with a structured programme if required – this would ensure you fulfill any requirements for future licences or ratings. You can choose between a 10 tach hour, 15 tach hour or 25 tach hour package on any of our aircraft.

I had a national PPL which lapsed some years ago and I’m now looking to do some refresher training to recover my licence. I did do some flying with this in mind 2 years ago but had a skiing accident which prevented me from flying until recently. The IAA have confirmed that what I require is to do some ‘refresher’ training hours with an RTF that has a SEP and then apply for an EASA licence. My total flying hours which were on 8 different type of aircraft are 238 hours.

Can you advise me of membership fees and flying costs with Waterford Flying Club? I live in Curracloe, Wexford.

    Many thanks,
